The Nordic Baltic Meeting 2024

17.04.2024

The Young Academy of Denmark hosted the annual meeting between the Nordic and Baltic young academies on 2-3 April at the premises of The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters in Copenhagen.

All the seven Nordic and Baltic counties with young academies had representatives present at the meeting, and all together 36 participants took part in the meeting.

The programme included two keynote presentations, a panel discussion, and three workshop sessions.

The first keynote speaker was Katherine Richardson, Professor in Biological Oceanography at the University of Copenhagen, who gave a presentation on the topic of Transgression of planetary boundaries.

Her talk was followed by a panel discussion between her and Siddharth Sareen, Professor in Energy and Environment at the University of Stavanger, who is further a member of the Young Academy of Norway.

The second keynote was presented by Professor Andreas Roepstorff from Aarhus University, who is also Vice President of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. He spoke on the importance of strong Nordic-Baltic relations and collaborations.

The three workshop sessions covered two different subjects. The first two were writing and discussion sessions concerned with the theme of Prof. Richardson’s keynote and the following panel debate, while the last workshop was a so-called Phoenix activity. The concept of the Nordic-Baltic Meetings was burned down and new ideas on how to arrange these meetings in the future emerged from the ashes.

The meeting also left room for a round of presentations of the current state-of-affairs in the different young academies.

The social part of the event included a banquet on Tuesday evening.
